On July 26, 1991, the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board) published the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).
These guidelines establish accessibility standards for new construction and alterations of state and local government facilities, as well as places of public accommodation and commercial buildings.
Updated in the ADAAG Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on November 16, 1999, section 302.3 specifies that “openings in floor or ground surfaces must not allow passage of a sphere more than 1/2 inch (13 mm) in diameter. Elongated openings should be oriented so that the long dimension is perpendicular to the main direction of travel.”
